Thoughts on Summer 2015 Anime

As you might know, if you read my About PetsyCast, I’m also a big anime fan so I watch everything I like. Besides some series I have been watching for years I start watching new anime each season in general. The summer brought me some great new anime to follow and I’m writing my thoughts on them so far.

Dragon Ball Super

When they announced Dragon Ball Super I was really happy. A continuation on Dragon Ball Z was just to good to be true but damn they pulled trough with it. The first episode was kind of fun and showed many of the characters. After that we had one episode focused on Vegeta’s daily life and after that it was rehashing time. It’s a shame we haven’t really gotten to see anything new yet as they are first rehashing the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie. The animations so far aren’t too good either which is a shame. Dragon Ball Super has been the one of poorest new anime I started following this summer unfortunately. Let’s hope the story and the animations get better after the rehashing is done.

Dragon Ball Super anime

Gangsta. is a story on a crazy town with loads of criminal activity. In this anime you follow the daily life of two handymen which can be hired to do all kinds of dirty work for the mob and for the cops. Worick is a normal person while Nicolas is something called a “Twilight”. Twilights are persons with superhuman abilities gained trough the use of a drug. This anime is full of violence and so far doesn’t really have a steady story. Basically the episodes just follow one of the jobs the handymen take up. Another main character, Alex Benedetto, who is a former prostitute saved by Worick and Nicolas seems to part of a bigger story. So far Gangsta. has been good fun to watch and I’m looking forward to the coming episodes to see if Alex really plays a part in a bigger ongoing story in the town of Ergastulum.

OverLord is my favorite summer 2015 anime so far. OverLord is about an MMORPG that is closing down. The protagonist decides to stay inside the game for the final moments before closing down. The time the game should close down passes but he is not logged out. He finds out he is stuck in the game and all the non-player controlled characters are now following him. He was the guildmaster of a non-human guild in the game. He is an undead and his lackeys are demons and other monsters. He finds out his castle is now positioned in a completely different world and sets out to explore. Soon he finds out he is by far the strongest being in that world. OverLord features a different view on the “being stuck in a game”-genre. I’m really enjoying the absolute power the protagonist has in this anime. Oh, the theme song is really awesome as well.

Rokka No Yuusha

Rokka No Yuusha translated into Braves of the Six Flowers and is a based on a light novel series. Each so many years the Demon King revives and has to be destroyed by the six strongest humans in the world. At the time of revival these six are chosen and receive a Flower Mark on their body. This time around there are seven braves gathered at the meeting point leading them to think there is an impostor among them. The main character is the most suspicious one and gets picked out as the seventh. The other six try to take him down but he manages to get away. A game of mind starts to find out who the real seventh is. The action in Rokka No Yuusha is great and the story is one that stays in your mind for a while because of the mind games. It’s certainly a very entertaining anime which I recommend to any Shounen fans.

God Eater

God Eater is the most violent anime I started watching this summer. The anime is based the God Eater-video game series created by developer Shift. The world has become a desolate place full of so called “Aragami”. These monsters kill and eat humans and caused to human population to drop drastically to a point close to extinction. Strong warriors that oppose the Aragami with so called God Arcs, huge weapons, are called God Eaters. The story follows one of these God Eaters in his adventure to kill as many Aragami as possible. The animations of this anime is what makes it stand out from the rest. The style used is very unique and pleasant to watch. The action is great but not for the weak of hearth. Blood will splatter everywhere and you will see a lot of it.

Attackers from a foreign world invade Tokyo trough a gate and start wreaking havoc in the city. Technology on earth is much more advanced however. Using military force Japan manages to drive the invaders back to the world they came from. Japan decides to send a military unit trough the gate to explore the new world. Some wars are fought but the main focus is on a battalion that is tasked to make friendly connections with the inhabitants. Myths like elves, catwomen and dragons come to life in this new world and soon the battalion manages to find some allies on the new world. The anime does a great job at showing the emotion of all characters and it includes a deeper and darker side of politics that are going on on earth as well. The theme song really fits GATE as well. It’s one of those theme songs you can listen every time.

Joukamachi no Dandelion

Besides all these action packed anime I do enjoy Comedy-anime a lot as well. Joukamachi no Dandelion is a great comedy anime with loads of laughable moments. In the castle town of Dandelion lives a family of eleven. At first sight they are a ordinary family but the father of this family is the King and each of the children has a special power. In a year from now their father will choose a new king which leads the children into doing their best to gain the favor of the public. Each child has their own problems and reason for trying to become the king and this makes for hilarious comedy moments. All episodes have a couple of shorter fragments which works really well. If you want something fun to watch that doesn’t need any thinking be sure to check out Joukamachi no Dandelion.

Aoharu x Kikanjuu

Aoharu x Kikanjuu is an anime on survival games. In these survival games you have to shoot your enemy’s with BB-guns to win. One day Hotaru, a girl looking like a boy and the main character of this show, destroys stuff at a host cafe and is forced to join the survival game team the host is in to pay off her debts. They don’t know that she is in fact a she because the host would have never allowed her to join them otherwise. She joins the team for some survival games and starts to really like the games and the new friends she makes. She gets pulled into a feud her team has with another team and starts to feel really connected to the team. At this point she still hasn’t told her team that she is a girl and this is starting to weigh down on her. It’s a great anime and I mostly like the stuff going on around the real battles. It’s about Hotaru trying to be accepted by the team not knowing how to tell them she as a girl. I can’t wait to see how this concludes.
